All season long, I’ve been planning on trying out a couple of BMWCCA races this year. There is one coming up (with SCCA Vintage) at Infineon on September 20-21, and another at the same track October 25-26 (with NASA HPDE). But … after consulting with the family, I’ve decided to change the plan.
The fact is that although I’m a BMWCCA member, I don’t have a BMWCCA racing license (not that I couldn’t get one with the SCCA background), and it would be a lot of work to put the BMWCCA-required graphics package on the car, because of their silly required number panel.
And also, all season long, my goal has been to run fewer events at Thunderhill and more at Laguna Seca and Infineon, primarily because I can commute to those tracks from home each day (less than 90 minutes each way) rather than stay in a hotel.
But … I’m having SO much fun at the SCCA races this year, and this plan I had would have involved skipping the season finale which also has the annual 4-hour Illgen Enduro on the same weekend … because it’s at Thunderhill this year, and it’s on the same weekend as that second BMWCCA race.
So … what I decided I’d do is exchange the two BMWCCA races and the one November NASA race at Infineon, three weekends, for the SCCA season finale and enduro at Thunderhill, on October 24-26. I will work out a plan to race in that enduro in my car with one or two other drivers, announcement to follow. The only endurance race I’ve ever done was the 2007 24 Hours of LeMons at Altamont in July, which we won. It was a bit of a funky race … I’d love to do a “real” enduro, and this seems to be to be a great opportunity.
Also: the schedule for the next SCCA race on October 3-5 at Laguna Seca, a double regional, has been published. The schedule looks great for us — we get a bonus race on Sunday afternoon, so it’ll be six sessions, 2 sessions per day, including 3 races on the weekend.
Looks like Friday, 10/3, we practice at 10:30 and qualify at 1:00. Then Saturday, 10/4, first race is at 11:50, and then we qualify for Sunday at 3:15. And then Sunday, 10/5, are two more races, at 10:15 and 3:40. Looks like a great schedule for friends to come and hang out, crew, or just spectate! When you don’t want to be at the track, you can head around the corner to Monterey, where there’s more than enough to occupy the whole family’s attention. Come on down and make a weekend out of it!
